Carol
Zekovitch Carol Zekovitch is being recognized as our Featured Volunteer for her hard work over the past 5 years. Carol has been around cancer for most of her life. Not only was her daughter diagnosed twice with two separate cancers, but both of her sisters had breast cancer. Her daughter and sisters are in remission. Carol also lost two brothers to cancer; an older brother to lung and spine cancer as well as a younger brother to lung cancer. Her daughter Tanya Zekovitch is not only a cancer survivor but she also founded this organization. Since Tanya started the idea of Cancer Survivors Unite, Carol has stood behind her and helped in every way that she could. Carol is the "Mailer" of the organization. Every newsletter since August of 2005 as well as all mailings we have done, Carol has put together. She is given the materials and within a few hours the mailing is together and ready to go to the post office. Carol also helps with running our resource tables at various events throughout the year. In 2008 Carol began to learn the computer, and is now assisting with data entry as well as all mailings. Carol says she enjoys volunteering because she gets to meet new people and learn about what others have gone through with their treatment, as well as how far they have come post-treatment. Carol is disabled due to back surgery several years ago; she still suffers with chronic back pain. Currently she volunteers when she can with Cancer Survivors Unite and select other organizations. She is also a mommy to quite a few animals, including the best dog ever, Buddy, who acts as our mascot. We look forward to many more years with Carol being a part of our Cancer Survivors Unite family. What advice would you give to
new volunteers? What are the negatives of
volunteering with Cancer Survivors Unite? When asked, "What is the most rewarding part of volunteer for Cancer Survivors Unite?" Carol told us that it feels like she is helping in some way, and that it gives her the feeling of "doing her part" with giving back to the cancer community after all they did for her when family members were diagnosed. |
