American Cancer Society Continuing your education can be tough after a cancer diagnosis. The American Cancer Society offers a scholarship program for young adult cancer survivors wanting to further their education. Each region has different scholarship awards and requirements. Contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345or at www.cancer.org for your local ACS office.
The Andre Sobel River of Life Award The Andre Sobel Award was established to honor survivors of catastrophic illness (under the age of 21) and to enable them to fulfill a cherished desire as they proceed with their lives. A $5,000 cash award is presented to the first place winner of the essay contest, with additional cash prizes awarded to honorable mention winners. As opposed to a scholarship, the Andre Sobel cash awards can be used in any way the recipients choose. (310-276-7111) www.AndreRiverofLife.org
Cancer for College Cancer for College was founded in 1993 by Craig Pollard, a two-time cancer survivor. Cancer for College provides one-time and recurring scholarships for current and former cancer patients. The scholarships are available for attendance at a four-year or two-year undergraduate institution or graduate school. Scholarship amounts vary, ranging from $100 one time scholarships to four year perpetual scholarships of larger dollar amounts. Cancer Survivors Fund Scholarships are granted for college education of cancer survivors. Recipients are selected by a committee based on applicants' personal hardship and financial need. The applicant must be a cancer survivor or currently diagnosed with cancer, and does not have to be receiving treatment to qualify. Carolyn's Compassionate Children The Carolyn's Compassionate Children College Scholarship Program provides financial resources to childhood cancer survivors for undergraduate or graduate education. Fly for Leukemia Eagles Fly for Leukemia awards three $1,500 Kim Hill Scholarships and one full scholarship to St. Joseph's University and Drexel University. The Hydrocephalus Association Applicants must be between 17 and 30 years old and have hydrocephalus. The scholarships are $500 each, and will be awarded in June. Scholarship funds must be used for an educational purpose: a four-year or junior college, a high school post-graduate year to prepare for college, technical or trade school, an accredited employment-training program or a post-graduate program. Jay's World Childhood Cancer Foundation Jay's World Childhood Cancer Foundation Inc. has a college scholarship program for children with cancer living in New York. The Mary Ellen Locher Foundation This is a national fund established by a mother and breast cancer survivor who once worried about her own child's education to provide scholarships for secondary education especially to children who have lost a parent to breast cancer and children of breast cancer survivors. Michael A. Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scholarships are offered nationwide to graduating high school seniors, community college and four-year university students who are leukemia or lymphoma patients and/or are children of non-surviving leukemia or lymphoma patients. National Collegiate Cancer Fund The National Collegiate Cancer Foundation was established to provide services and support to young adults between 18 and 35 years of age, whose lives have been impacted by cancer. These young adults have continued with their education throughout treatment or after their treatment. Scholarships are $1,000 competitive awards and all are one time awards. Previous awardees are encouraged to apply each year that awards are offered. However, they must submit a new application each year. (717-215-0943)www.collegiatecancer.org
Patient Advocate Foundation Applicant must be under the age of 25 and a survivor/current patient of a diagnosis of cancer or a critical or life threatening disease. Once the Scholarship has been granted you must agree to maintain an overall 3.0 G.P.A, be a full time student, and sign an agreement to complete 20 hours of community service for the year the scholarship will be dispensed and provide PAF with a written confirmation from a supervisor when that service has been completed. Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation The PBTF is proud to offer a scholarship program to students who have survived a central nervous system tumor. Awards may be used to cover tuition, fees and books at any post-secondary institution, including technical schools, vocational schools, junior colleges and four-year colleges or universities. The Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund The Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund is a non-profit corporation offering scholarship assistance to young people who are fighting cancer. We are looking for young men and women whose high school years were disrupted by cancer and whose ability to qualify for most scholarships was precluded by the extensive absenteeism and physical disabilities which result from chemotherapy and radiation. The Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund offers a $1,000 scholarship for cancer survivors. Candidates must be US citizens or permanent residents, have been diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 13 and graduation from high school, and currently be age 22 or younger. Priority is given to students still undergoing treatment, those with permanent effects from treatment and those at the beginning of their post-high school education. Stephen T. Marchello Scholarship Foundation The Stephen T. Marchello Scholarship Foundation provides college scholarships of up to $2,500 a year for four years to high school graduates who are cancer survivors. The SAMFund Surviving and Moving Forward - AKA - The SAMFund proudly provides financial assistance to young adults as they move forward with their lives after cancer. Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 35, finished with active treatment and residents of the United States. http://www.thesamfund.org
Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation Scholarships for post high school education are made available to brain tumor patients/survivors and/or children of brain tumor patients/survivors to enable them to pursue educational programs at accredited four-year colleges and universities, two-year colleges, vocational-technical schools or other institutions of higher learning. Ulman Fund The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults National College Scholarship Program was established to support the financial needs of young adults whose lives have been impacted by cancer and are seeking a higher education. There are five competitive scholarship awards. Please pay careful attention to the criteria for each award, as the eligibility requirements for the individual scholarships may vary. Working Against Cancer Working Against Cancer's Survival Scholarship Program assists young adult cancer survivors (ages 30 yrs and under) by providing awards toward academic and vocational education. These scholarships will encourage each recipient to engage in a trade, an art, or some other form of higher education relieving some of the additional burden in obtaining the necessary finances to reach these goals. Candidates must be a cancer survivor or recently diagnosed with cancer, but do not need to be currently receiving treatment to qualify.
